Our lamb has been touted by
our customers as “the best I’ve ever tasted”. As relatively new farmers,
we were ecstatic that our product was so well received! We guessed it was just
“beginner’s luck” as our experience was still limited. But as more and
more of our customers complimented our product and continued to abandon their
former suppliers in pursuit of our grass finished lamb, we began to investigate.
We don’t feed any grain products to our lambs or the ewes; they are
completely grass fed. The lambs are born in the spring and nurse their mother’s
milk. The ewe weans the lamb naturally over the course of the summer, forcing
the young lamb to develop its grazing proficiency, naturally progressing from
mother’s milk to native grasses.
That’s when our lamb departs from the commercial supply of lamb product on
the market. It’s the grass!
To understand the quality of our grass finished meat; you must understand the
quality of our grasses. Our region in southwest Virginia and specifically in
Burke’s Garden, is known for its rich soils, higher elevation above sea level,
cooler temperatures and resulting cool season grasses. It is said that this
unique combination of native grasses and climate are matched in only two other
places in the world; Wyoming and Switzerland.
The uniqueness of our climate, our soils and grasses provide the superior
finishing quality of our livestock. We have been blessed with ample rainfall,
abundant grass and healthy animals, all contributing to the unique quality of
our meats.
